I was born and lived in Brentwood for much of my time.

Brentwood; or Hutton to be precise was a nice place to live during my younger years. There were other youngsters in the street, and back then we all got on reasonably well together. This was during the 1960s and 70s.

Towards the end of my schooling I got a Saturday job (as was customary back then) cutting a lady’s grass.

Only those of you who lived in the Hutton area would probably be aware of the next piece. Just outside of Hutton, on the way to Billericay was a binocular center on its own; know as ‘English.’

The couple that owned it, had a large detached house just off of Hall Green Lane, and the lady placed an advert, saying she was looking for a gardener for three hours on a Saturday morning. I applied, and to my surprise, I was offered the job.

One thing I was; was rather particular about what I did, so although I did take my time, she was very pleased with what I achieved.

It obviously showed, as I was approached by another lady, who asked me if I could cut her grass. So I ended up with two gardening jobs.

I departed school a year earlier than what I should have done, and got my first job, as what was known as a contract florist. This involved being picked up outside my house at about 6.30am by a chap in a then Escort van, and driven to London. The van had pot plants, watering cans, and gardening tools eg forks, spades and a petrol lawn mower.

When you walk into Banks or companies, they often have floral displays on show. Back then, the company I worked for supplied and maintained those displays. They also maintained corporate and private lawns, and this had to be done properly ie in straight lines.

When I began working for the florist company, I should have kept the two jobs on Saturday going, but I wasn’t in that mode of thinking.

I was only with the florists for about a year and then I left. This was partly due because I didn’t understand enough about certain things which were happening.

I then joined the Royal Mail.

This was at the end of the 1970s.
