I left the Royal Mail in 1987 after eight years and although there had been issues, I’d really enjoyed my time there.

There were also things going on outside of work, which were not helping me. This was also part of the reason I was traveling to Wales at the weekends.

One good thing about going into the print industry was it forced me to focus on what was happening.

Below. The building on the right, where I worked for just under two years.

I was now also working in a much smaller environment. It was actually a very small factory just outside of Ongar. Being the print industry it was also dirty and noisy, which was something I wasn’t used to. Thankfully I was only there for just under two years, although; those two years seemed like an eternity.

The money I was earning also dropped considerably and this meant I was now no longer able to travel back and forth to Wales.

This was also before the days of mobile phones, and the internet. Therefore; I had no way of contacting the people I had got to know in Wales.

I didn’t really learn that much in the print industry in the time I was there, as I was being trained up on what was then letterpress and then I was introduced to litho.

I knew in my own thoughts that I wouldn’t be there forever, as this was really just a stepping stone.

Because of what I had been earning with the Royal Mail compared to what I was earning now, I really had to make a concerted effort to pay for my HGV lessons and test. Thus; I really had to concentrate on getting that amount of money together.

However; the incentive to pass was so great, that I just put everything I had into it.
