About   This   Website

This website was created... so I could put myself on the internet.

I also chose to learn the coding process, as that’s what’s required… to allow you to see the site…’as it is’ on the internet.

Behind all the  words...   and ...   and ...
  is code.

I could have chosen one of the many free ‘create it yourself’ websites and created it with one of the so called ‘drag and drop’ facilities. These facilities are great if you’re happy with what you get... but I wasn’t happy with what they did.

Personally; I prefer to have…   complete control  over every part of the website, ie how it  looks  and functions. (No… it’s not a link… but it causes the curser to act as such)

This required me to learn coding; and what is known as HTML, CSS, JAVA, PHP etc, etc.

As coding is rather complex; it is advantageous to have at least some general knowledge of what coding does and how it translates to what is actually seen and happening on the actual website.

Because I chose to do this myself, it also required me to register the appropriate www name (known as domain name) and also have a hosting facility, ie a way of having the website ‘actually on display’ on the internet’.  It doest just happen... by magic.

I also required an FTP program (File Transfer Protocol) so I could actually transfer the content of the site, from my computer, to the hosting facility, so the site would actually show up… on the internet.

If you choose a ‘drag and drop’ facility ie, Wix, Moonfruit, Weebly etc, then all the things I have just mentioned… are included.

I also read the terms and conditions of some of these sites (Yes I know… … Yawn! ) and I wasn’t very impressed with the buried small print.

Approaching this, the way I have, has meant I’ve had to create absolutely everything on the website. The graphics, pictures, photos, everything… and again, it doesn’t come together by magic; you do have to have an understanding of what is happening behind the scenes.

In other words, I didn’t sit down on a spare Sunday afternoon, and think… ‘I’ll create a website.’ This took me four years to master, and often required me to be up all night… well 3 to 4am is the middle of the night, trying to resolve a problem.

After quite a bit of searching, I chose a hosting facility called ‘Hostgator’. One reason for choosing them is they have a high percentage of uptime. This means they keep the website ‘live’ on the internet. Additionally; they charge monthly, some hosting companies charge per annum.

The other big advantage… is no matter how many websites I create, ie one or ten or one hundred or even more… the monthly fee is still the same.

Obviously; I had to register a domain, and I usually register for one year, simply because, I may not want the website in a years time.

Registering the name took a little bit of doing as some domain registers give you a minimum registration period of two years, and I don’t appreciate that system of conduct. My thought was, I wish to register for one year.

It required a bit of researching, and going through the small print… but eventually I chose a registrant in the United States.

I also required what is known as an FTP program (File Transfer Protocol) so I could actually transfer the content of the site, from my computer, to the hosting facility, so the site would actually show up… on the internet.

So… now you have an idea of how this website came into being, and what was involved in putting it on the internet.
